Discord File Size Limit: Current Caps and Workarounds

Discord caps upload sizes for free accounts, blocking larger videos and archives. Here is how the limits work and how to share files that exceed them.

Discord's current upload limits

Discord rejects files that exceed its per-file upload cap with a message saying the file is too powerful. As of September 2026, Discord's File Attachments FAQ states a 10 MB maximum for non-Nitro users, though multiple August 2026 reports say Discord raised the free limit to 20 MB. The company has shifted this number several times over the years between 8 MB, 25 MB, 10 MB, and 20 MB. Because these numbers change frequently, the error prompt inside your Discord client is the most authoritative measure of your current free cap. Paid Discord Nitro subscriptions raise the ceiling up to 500 MB depending on the tier.

Even when an upload fits within the free limit, Discord is not designed as a long-term file host. Discord attachment CDN links use time-stamped cryptographic signatures. These signed URLs expire after a short period, meaning pasted attachment links eventually break when shared outside the original channel or viewed later.

When your file exceeds the Discord file size limit, you do not need to compress it or pay for Nitro. You can host the file externally and paste the link into your chat.

To do this, go to yoink.zip in your web browser. Drag your file into the uploader. You do not need to create an account or sign in, though an optional Google sign-in is available. Presigned browser upload sessions expire after 15 minutes, which gives the browser a 15-minute window to complete the transfer to storage.

Once the upload finishes, Yoink generates a single direct URL on the files.yoink.zip domain. The API declares a 5 GiB per-file size ceiling, which is far larger than Discord's default attachment caps. Paste this files.yoink.zip URL directly into your Discord channel or direct message.

Keep in mind that Yoink does not offer a promised file lifetime, and there is no self-service remote deletion. Always keep your local copies of whatever you upload. The main operational difference compared to Discord CDN links is that Yoink URLs do not have per-link signature expiration, so the URL remains static.

When you paste a regular website link into Discord, Discord usually shows an Open Graph link preview box with a thumbnail and title. Pasting a direct files.yoink.zip URL behaves differently.

The files.yoink.zip server returns the raw file bytes directly with the correct content-type header. There is no intermediate landing page, no HTML wrapper, and no countdown timer. Because the URL points directly to the data stream, Discord treats it like an inline attachment.

If you paste a link to a common image format like JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP, Discord fetches the raw bytes and displays the image directly inside the chat log. Video files with supported codecs embed into Discord's native media player. The client handles the resource identically to a standard attachment, while the file data is served entirely from outside Discord's servers. Yoink servers also leave GET and HEAD requests open to all origins and return an X-Robots-Tag: noindex header, preventing search engines from indexing the link.

What recipients see

For people in the chat, the experience is almost identical to receiving a normal upload. They can view the image or stream the video directly in their Discord feed.

When someone clicks the file to download it, their browser pulls the original, uncompressed file directly from the files.yoink.zip link. The recipient does not need a Discord account, a Nitro subscription, or an account on Yoink. The link is completely public, meaning anyone who holds the URL can fetch the file. There are no access passwords or per-recipient permissions.

Your local browser only tracks the last 5 uploads on that specific machine via localStorage, with no cross-device sync. As long as you have shared the link, your recipients can retrieve the data at its full original size.
